Big news in the USA eSports scene. On March 1, IGN announced IPL6 had been cancelled shortly after Ziff Davis’ acquisition of the gaming network.

IGN was looking for potential buyers of the entire IPL eSports property. Barely a month later, IGN has announced the new owner.

Just days after Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime announced the consolidation of the WCS Global League, IGN drops the bomb. Blizzard Entertainment has acquired IGN Pro League (IPL) technology and assets.

Great things are happening very quickly for the eSports community. It just makes you wonder what Blizzard is cooking. Is this just the icing of the cake?

“This new team will help us to further develop the rich media experiences that extend the fun and engagement of our games online,” said Blizzard executive vice president of publishing Itzik Ben-Bassat. “This is a team of passionate gamers with a proven track record, and we’re looking forward to now leveraging their expertise and technology to support a variety of online efforts.”
