Starcraft 2 in 2007?

Starcraft 2 in development? IGN cornered Paul Sams, VP of Business Operations, on the Leipzig show floor in Germany; and he reveals his love for Starcraft. And the announcement of a new game on 2007. You have to read this interview.
Paul Sams: "StarCraft is my absolutely favorite game of all time," Sams told us. "As you probably already know, there is no doubt that we will continue the StarCraft and Diablo franchise, and trust me, I will be the happiest person in the world when we announce StarCraft 2." While Sams wasn't ready to spill the beans just yet, he did say Blizzard "will have a major product announcement in 2007," and that Blizzard was currently working on at least three other unannounced titles at the moment.

How good would Starcraft Chronicles be?

This is a question often made by fans who have heard of the unofficial Starcraft Chronicles CGI film. Kristijan Stuhli simply said: "Watch this Marvel Ultimate Alliance teaser ... our CGI film will look better than that!". Let's hope this CGI Team delivers. It would really blast all Starcraft fans off their socks!
Kristijan - CGI Director: "That is somewhat like Starcraft Chronicles the unofficial CGI film. Starcraft Chronicles will maybe be better than that. Blur Studios created that Marvel Ultimate Alliance teaser with around 20 developers."

Note: Starcraft Chronicles CGI Team consists of 57 modelers. 20 of them are animators(List is not updated, there may be more). Active members counting all teams: 111. Few still need to get registered on the forum. Total: 125 members. (as of today, and growing)

Blizzard allows Penguin Plug on Battle.net

SCLegacy is on a mission to renew and revitalize the Starcraft spirit aggressively with news and interviews. Today, SCLegacy got word that a Blizzard Representative acknowledged Penguin Plug to be allowed on Battle.net. This marks an EULA/TOS precedent concerning the use of third-party software. SCLegacy recommends all Starcraft players to download Penguin Plug ONLY and EXCLUSIVELY from BWProgrammers.com and soon to be available from WGTour website as their official launcher to play in Battle.net first fan-based Ladder in the Europe gateway.

Now that you heard a litle of the history, plus a Blizzard's rep answer, you know it is as far as we know officially tolerated, if not allowed by Blizzard. And now you know the rest of the story...

Read the long article by SCLegacy and leave your comment.
DatH an official Blizzard Poster (staff) answered:

"It looks like Penguin Plug is allowed. It looks like it is just allowed due to ladder and for no other reason. I don't have more information on it yet, but when I do I'll post more stuff. Right now I'm basing this off of pre-1.14 bug findings within QA"

Ashur: "PPlug is used by the biggest ladders to stop cheating. Yes, its a hack, but it saying that you have no c-h-e-a-t running on your machine. So the "hackers" on the evil site are actually cheaters. Their primary job is to make c-h-e-a-t-s. So if you want to be 100% secure, don't use the hacks, because you currently violates the Battle.net terms. When the WGTour launcher will appear, you will know what?s legal and illegal. But I hope you now know the difference between c-h-e-a-t, and anti-hack."
Special thanks to Entropy aka physician and LordofAscension for the heads up!

Joystiq: The perfect SCV Rush

Joystiq brings up the memory of an epic battle of SlayerS_'BoxeR' that Joystiq dubs as The perfect SCV Rush! ... Groovy! Watch the video
Joystiq: "Yeah, this is a bit old, but it certainly deserves another viewing -- especially if you are a StarCraft fan patiently waiting for a sequel. There's a YouTube video up of SlayerS_'BoxeR' and his destruction of a foe using only Terran SCVs. SCVs people! Do you understand how hardcore that is?"

Joystiq: Blizzard moves Console Devs to PC projects

Joystiq mentions that Blizzard has moved staff from the Console Department into the PC games depatment. This added to the job openings requiing RTS games experience, a level designer with knowledge of Starcraft and Warcraft campaigns, and of course, the Cinematic animator job opening released recently seems to point out to a possible Starcraft and Warcraft 4 in the horizon. Note how Blizzard talks in plural about games in production.

However, Joystiq points out a tragical fate for Starcraft: Ghost ... "the transition away from consoles is just another nail in Starcraft: Ghost's coffin."

The Starcraft Conundrum

I have written a short article summarizing briefly the length of time Starcraft players have been waiting for a new Starcraft game. Some of the Starcraft: Ghost delays and its postponement, and what all of us are left to look forward until Blizzard Entertainment comes out with a meaningful announcement of any new Starcraft game.

For now we only have new Starcraft pocketbooks to dig into the Starcraft lore, and two awesome fan-made projects that have every Starcraft fan on the edge of their seats: Project Revolution (total conversion) and Starcraft Chronicles (The Unofficial CGI Film). [Read more]

As for more Starcraft Chronicles CGI Film updates, below you can see sample artwork of some of the 3D modellers that joined the team. Here we can take a glimpse into their innate talent and the potential of the fan-made film.

Starcraft Chronicles CGI: Artwork by Aeres

Aeres is a 3D Modeler and Animator from Malaysa who joined the Starcraft Chronicles CGI Film Team. He uses Lightwave for modeling and animation; and After Effects for post-processing very often. Aeres will most likely work on some of the vehicle and object models of the CGI, beside other tasks yet undetermined. Take a look below, two of his samples featuring his vehicle models and a piano. Like everyone in the team, he is excited and wishing to do his best for the Starcraft community's enjoyment.

If you are a 3D modeler and/or animator with excellent talent, have experience in the CGI, film, video industry. You know your way around Lightwave, Maya or 3d Max Studio; or if unexperienced think you got skills enough to make this a great fan-made CGI film, apply by contacting me here.

Note: Starcraft Chronicles is an Unofficial Fan-made CGI Film not affiliated with Blizzard Entertainment. A non-profit / non-paid project. This is not a Blizzplanet project. Kristijan Stuhli known as Critical.Mechanism is the team leader.

Starcraft Chronicles CGI Team: The Scope

On Sunday, Kristijan (Critical.Mechanism) asked me to join the Starcraft Chronicles CGI Team to run ends, call it PR or Community Manager. Don't know why, my grammar is horrible. Kristijan emailed all the volunteers. They emailed me to get access to the temporary Team forum. I am building up the database holding the career, skills, position sought and contact details of each volunteer. Once a project manager(s) is(are) chosen by Kristijan, the database will be given to start assigning tasks. However, this is still few days off from happening. Kristijan will be on vacations for two weeks. When he's back things will start rolling.

For now, all the CGI Team members will be gathering reference links of top tutorials online. The film experts in the team were asked to build custom tutorials as well to teach the less experienced. Next two weeks will be of new recruitments and tutorial endeavor, polishing skills and educating. Sounds like fun.

In the meantime, I will be showing non-CGI artwork samples to spotlight the work of the volunteers. First one is Mitch. He created this few years ago, and his skills have increased by far nowadays. He was former Camelot Systems member. Mitch has one year of Pro experience in Modeling/pre-Production, has worked on Software/Robotics, and is proficient with Lightwave, 3DSMAX, Maya, AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, and Modo. Mitch will be guiding the team while Kristijan is out.

Note: Some rumors need to be straighten up. This CGI is not a Blizzplanet project. It is led by Kristijan Stuhli, known as Critical.Mechanism. He invited me to join the team last Sunday ... few days after I posted the news on Blizzplanet. Currently running loose errands doing random Assistant, PR, Community Manager tasks. [Post a Comment]

Starcraft Chronicles: A Fan-made CG Animated Movie

English | Espa?ol

"A worldwide team of 3D Artists have plans to develop a short fan-made high-quality CGI animated movie of Starcraft as a collaborative freelance non-profit project. This CGI project is still in the hiring process, with no script, being at its early stages. It is a volunteer effort by fans of the Starcraft community. The brain behind this endeavor convokes Dozens of 3D modelers and animators worldwide to join the team and share credits. If you are seriously thinking to apply to Blizzard or other game developer ... this would be a great demo reel."

Starcraft Chronicles will be a "Starcraft story developed in High-Quality CGI Animation?. High Polygon 3D Artists are welcome to join this professional team. I can't disclose the identity of two key elements who are in the process of joining the team - but they are top guns from big H. Some CGI professionals from Hollywood want to spare some free time to make it a High Quality movie.

To resolve some things right away, this has nothing to do with Blizzard Entertainment. This is not a profitable-financed project and has no offensive material that can damage Blizzard. The team behind this project is not affiliated with Blizzard and is run by Starcraft fan community professional 3D modelers and animators.

Almost anyone can volunteer to join the project, and there is no limit of how many people can join specific fields, BUT there are some requirements. 3D Artists are encouraged to join this project and to benefit from each other?s work. A workflow and file management is in place to put together a team working from anywhere in the world. The Starcraft Chronicles team will use a production forum and there is a specific pipeline to it. They will have special forums for tutorials and learning needs. In the end it is a great career boost, because later on you can use it for your show-reel. There are specific fields in which you can join. The Starcraft Chronicles team accepts any support and welcome you to join the project. There is no time limit, there is no pressure.

Positions and tasks needed:
  • 3D Modelers: Character, Objects, Vehicle modelers
  • Character Animators: Human and non-Human
  • Special Effects: Fluids, particles, hair, etc.
  • Lightning and Rendering
  • Matte painters & Concept Artists
  • Workflow/Pipeline and Management
To Join submit samples:

? Forum Community

Want to find out more about the brain behind this project? Read a 3-pages interview of Croatian-artist Kristijan Stuhli at Digitaltutors. Kristijan is better known as Critical.Mechanism by the BlizzForums and SCLegacy Community. His artwork has featured in the Blizzard Fan Art Program. View sample artwork and a Lamborghini model video. Note: The images in this article are not related to the CGI. It is work done by Kristijan in the past.

Starcraft 2 in Development?

Sure it is being speculated countless of times, but the job openings keep pouring in like rain. Blizzard has said in the past months they are working on multiple games, and seek to move to next generation consoles. Recently a job opening required knowledge of Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii. This is possibly for Starcraft: Ghost which went into hiatus. Although development was halted, there were rumors they would port the game to next generation. But there is also what Blizzard said about expanding to console games. Maybe a new franchise or one of the franchises going to Next Generation Consoles.

Then we have another series of job openings clearly saying the first line in bold: " The team behind Diablo I and II is looking for an artist specializing in the creation of user interface art. This artist will create such things as in-game background screens, UI containers/borders, item icons, character portraits, etc. The ideal candidate has strong painting skills, the ability to adapt their style, and feels comfortable working in a team environment. "

So we have a possible Diablo III here. Back on 2003, after the executives left and shortly formed Flagship Studios (Hellgate: London), there was a exodus of 30 employees leaving Blizzard North. Buzz was there were two unannounced projects. Few may have known of this, but checking on Blizzard patents, back on 2003 there was a game titled Diablo II: Salvation registered. The patent seems expired.

However, this job opening available since May, seems to hint either a Starcraft 2, Warcraft 4 or new RTS Franchise game in development for PC. Back on March 15, we announced Dustin Browder had joined Blizzard Entertainment. He is a RTS developer with games such as Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth, Red Alert, Command & Conquer: Generals and MechWarrior under his sleeve.

The job opening below may have few interpretations and fans will differ among each other -- but here between us ... I hope it is Starcraft 2.

Game Balance Designer

Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a talented and enthusiastic game designer to join our award winning studio. This position will focus on play balance, systems balance and multiplayer gaming. The ideal candidate will be an experienced real-time strategy enthusiast with an excellent analytical understanding of competitive online play. Blizzard offers a fun, creative and technically challenging environment with excellent compensation and a full range of benefits.

Requirements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Absolute passion for playing and making computer games
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Experience playing real-time strategy games competitively
  • Can organize and clearly present complex data
  • Works well under deadlines
  • Has a demonstrable understanding of competitive strategy gaming
  • Excellent math skills
Pluses
  • Game design experience on a shipped product with head-to-head game-play
  • Experience in designing and playing Real-Time-Strategy games
  • Has played Blizzard strategy games extensively
  • Played Warcraft 3 and/or StarCraft competitively
No follow-up calls or e-mails, please. This is a full-time position in Irvine, CA; internships and part-time positions are not available at this time. To apply, please send a cover letter, r?sum?, salary history/requirements in separate Word format documents to: resumes@blizzard.com with your name and this job in the subject heading.

In your cover letter please answer the following questions:
  • What games are you currently playing?
  • Which competitive online games have you played?
  • What is your win/loss record in your "Top 3" favorite competitive games?

Blizzard will invite 8 champions who will vote on a draft to pick their teams to aim for a prize of $20,000. Read the Tournament details.
"We're pleased to present the first look at Blizzard Entertainment's upcoming StarCraft Sandlot Tournament!

Eight years after its release, StarCraft continues to rank among the most popular mediums for computer gaming competitions. Over the years, StarCraft has been supported by a large player base; community websites; and enthusiasts who continue to put much time, effort, and energy into the game. We felt there could be no better way to honor this passion than to organize a massive tournament on Battle.net and support the StarCraft community. Gamers across the globe will be able to get directly involved with the Sandlot Tournament, and this gives the world's best players a chance to battle it out for some serious cash"

Blizzard denies Franchises MMOs Model Exclusivity

I had decided not to post news about the "All Blizzard franchises will become MMOs" rumor even when I skeptically read it at major Game Networks; because strangely every single network would link to F13 blog rather than do their own news coverage. When you get only one source for such a BIG News, something is usually non-kosher. To me sounded fake. Trust me, with a news of such magnitude and impact, Vivendi and/or Blizzard would invite big guns in the media such as New York Times, GamesIndustry.biz, CVG to publish the news rather than make a closed-doors announcement ... specially if there is no official Press Release at blizzard.com

Now that Blizzard is denying the rumor -- that is news and may serve clarify to the fans that have seen this rumor go wide and beyond.

To those who have been under a rock, yesterday every single major gaming network posted that Vivendi told Wall Street representatives that Blizzard franchises would follow the MMO model: World of Diablo and World of Starcraft and that they have a development model to create MMOGs for $50 million in under three years. Someone at the official forums brought the topic, to which Blizzard Representatives answered the following:

Drysc: "I believe this was a misquote. We haven't announced any specific development plans beyond the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft, and we don't have any intentions to focus on only one genre or platform with our future games."

EnoYls (Rob Pardo): "Nothing in that rumor is true in regards to Blizzard. If I had to guess, there was some confusion between what Vivendi has planned for its its game division versus what Blizzard has planned. While Blizzard is owned by Vivendi, their game division operates seperately from Blizzard"

Now what was then told to Wall Street to initiate the rumor? The Cesspit, aware of the rumors and finding out the source, kindly have shown screenshots of the charts and slide-presentation shared to Wall Street - intended for financial analysts. The last image shows a table demonstrating the Franchise potential of Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo, separating them in two categories:
  • Dark Blue: Launched
  • Light Blue: Potential
It is this graphic which stirred the rumor. Starcraft and Diablo are highlighted in Light Blue on the MMOs column and Console column. Again, this was meant as a Wall Street Financial Analysis, and not as an official announcement that all franchises would follow the MMO model.

At most, speculatively, it could be interpreted as a potential to be developed as an MMO and a Console game respectively and/or simultaneously. Far from an official announcement to fuel a rumor. [Digg] [Wowbreak]

Aaron Rosenberg: New pocketbooks soon

Starcraft: Queen of Blades
Starcraft: Queen of Blades

Day of the Daemon
Day of the Daemon
Aaron Rosenberg, popular Star Trek book author and writer of STARCRAFT: QUEEN OF BLADES, confirms the book is on sale.

In our recent interview, he had commented there were discussions between Simon & Schuster, Blizzard Entertainment and Aaron Rosenberg for "possible" new Starcraft and Warcraft pocketbooks. Nothing is concrete, but it is good enough to keep our sight on new lore.

1. Is Starcraft: Queen of Blades officially on sale?

Aaron: Yes, it is definitely out -- I've had confirmed sightings in Palo Alto and Peoria, among others. Oh, and my first Warhammer book, Day of the Daemon, is out as well :)

2. In our recent interview we discussed a possibility of your participation in future Blizzard pocketbooks, not yet confirmed at that time. Did you get anything concrete yet about writing Starcraft, Diablo or Warcraft books?

Aaron: Hmm. I'd say there's a VERY good chance that I will be writing another StarCraft book. It is not concrete yet, however -- hopefully very soon. I've discussed the possibility of doing some WarCraft books as
well. There's interest on both sides (theirs and mine) so hopefully that will happen as well.

3. Christie Golden told me recently she is writing a Starcraft Trilogy and a World of Warcraft book, however she can't talk about it yet. She agreed to an interview with us by November. You can read here what Metzen said the World of Warcraft: Rise of the Horde book is about.

Aaron: That's very cool.

4. So, it looks like Blizzard wants to pump out books of different timeframes.

Aaron: I think so.
That's all Aaron Rosenberg told me. We will keep you up-to-date when those pocketbook deals are more official, as well as their title name.
